Evaluation questions 7

7) looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

during the planning process of our task, we had learnt that we needed to have a set genre in order to attract a certain audience, our storyboards helped us greatly as we needed to know the different areas that we would be shooting in and the different shots that would be needed.
The shots that we included in our film have improved, the shots that are included in our film are the best shots for that particularly clip. The shots give a good view of all the characters and keep within a good boundary of being to wide or to short. We had a match on action clip but we could not include it in our film because the clip was to blurry and we didn't have time to re film it. We used a good camera shot for the scene were the "stranger" knocks on the door, it is effective because it follows my character from leaving my room to opening the door downstairs but also zooms into other things happening around me.
I think that we are allot more confident around the equipment now, we can get what we want done allot quicker than we used to and allot better.
We feel that our main product came out exactly how we wanted it to, if we could change anything we would of put higher lighting on the "strangers" face when he knocks on the door because when we rendered it out in medium quality you cant see the face at all.

Evaluation questions 6

6) what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product

We have both learnt how to work a camera properly, we have learnt how to zoom in and zoom out, switch on into night mode, watch and delete previously recorded clips of the camera itself. We had a problem with our first idea for our film because it required us to to film out side when it was dark, we didn't know how to put the camera into night mode so we had to re think our idea completely, we also had a problem with one of the cameras, when we first pressed record the camera would be out of focus so we had to zoom in fully and zoom back out to put it back into focus. we learnt various things about final cut, we learnt how important clips from a camera cut video clips to make them shorter, fade in and out videos and music clips. We also learnt how to import our production logo from photoshop and how to convert our final film into different formats.

Evaluation questions 5

How did you attract/address your audience?
one of the ways in which we attracted our audience is was by, making our film appeal to them, we did this by looking at different types of audiences and examined what type of movies they would like to watch, our particular film attracts audiences that like horror/ thriller genres and we have incorporated these elements to attract that audience, also we looked into what our audience would like to see in a horror/ thriller movie to get better ideas on how to achieve what the audience need, we had found out that our particular audience liked elements of suspense and scary build ups that would have them on the edge of there seats. we took this on board and have utilized this area to attract our audience by using various diagetic sounds that build up and add suspense to our film. our target audience for our horror film are class E people aged 12-30 as the actors in the film are young and are in the same class, this also allows our audience to relate to the film and to be engaged.

Evaluation questions 4

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our film would be 15-26 year olds and a mixed audience of gender split 60/40 boys to girls, the class range for our film would be middle. For our primary research we created various questionnaires and surveys and gave them to people different ages, from our research we found that mainly young people aged between 15-30 would like to watch our horror film, with a mixed audience of 53% male and 47% female. For our secondary research we used pearl and dean to further research our target audience, we got the audience profile for paranormal activity and wolfman, we found that both of there audience's had a higher percentage of men than women and that 15-24 year olds were the biggest audience profile, DE was the class that viewed this film the most. From this research we have found that our audience will be mainly male and the age group will be 15-24.

Evaluation questions 3

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The media institution that might distribute out media product would be studio canal, this is because it is a small british independent company. The reason for this is studio canal is a low budget company and it not be able to spend a lot of money on advertising. The cast that would be used in this particular company are not famous as they are not able to afford to pay for big budget cast. As studio canal is a low budget company it would be able to go to any exotic or any locations that are well known, also they are not able to spend a lot of money on the marketing various products that implement the film. the distribution of the film would go straight to dvd or on the internet, there would be no premier needed for our film as it would be necessary, this is as studio canal are not able to and the fact that they are a small company, the premier wouldn't cause much of an impact on the distribution of the film.

Evaluation questions 2

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media film opening shot shows 3 teenage boys in a bedroom playing fifa, they are all represented in a stereotypical way as teenage boys who are at home are usually playing a console or on a computer. Later on in the film when there is knock on the door my character goes downstairs to see what it was and the way he acted is stereotypical to how a male teenager should act in that situation, He is curious and wants to know who it was so he goes out side to check if he can see anything, if the character was non-stereotypical he wouldn't of gone out side to check and would of ran back upstairs when you first see the antagonists face. After my character has explained what he has seen and there is another knock, all the characters again react as a stereotypical male teenager, what I mean by this is that there aren't any extreme reactions of fear and screams.
All the characters in our opening scene are represented as the social group. Our film would appeal to young adults and teenagers.

Evaluation questions 1

1) in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

the genre for our opening sequence is a horror. one of the generic conventions which are recognised within horror movies is blood/gore. We however have challenged this convention as we have not used this aspect in our production, the reason for this was because we did not think that we would need it in the opening as we played on the idea of suspense. If however our film continued for a full feature film, the element of blood and gore would have been incorporated. one of the films that we researched into was insidious,we got an idea from the scene when there is a bang on the door down stairs and theres no one there, then he goes back up, then the house alarm goes off, he goes back down stairs and the door is open, we also researched into strangers, we got the idea that when we are outside there was someone watching us. this is on of the conventions we used from the narrative of insidious and strangers.

Camera Movement

CAMERA MOVEMENT
We will need to consider different cuts between scenes, going from one shot to another one or to move the camera with an action when filming our horror opening this will allow us to add different affects and to make our horror opening look proffesional, there are six different camera shots that we could use when filming these are:
PANS - This is a moovement that allows the camera to moove horizontally, this moovements would be used to film a mooving object
TILTS - This is a moovement that mooves vertically
TRACKING SHOTS - This is when a camera is placed on a moving vehicle and moves alongside the action, generally following a moving figure or object.
HAND - HELD SHOTS - This moovement can make the audience feel as though they are part of a scene, rather than viewing it from a detached, frozen position.
CRANE SHOT - This is when a camera is placed on a crane and is a useful way of moving a camera - it can move up, down, left, right, swooping in on action or moving diagonally out of it.
ARIEL SHOT - This moovment is usually from an helicopter and is usually at the start of to film to show the setting, a helicopter can go anywhere, keep up with anything, move in and out of a scene, and convey real drama.

Camera Angles

CAMERA ANGLES
we will have to consider different camera angles when filming our horror opening to demonstrate different aspects of the setting, theme and the charachters, we will have to make sure that the angle that we film from is the right one for the pirtucular scene.

BIRDS EYE ANGLE - This angle is often used as an establishing angle, along with an extreme long shot, this shows the setting.
HIGHT ANGLE - This angle demonstrates  a perspective of a particular character, and a feeling of power.
EYE LINE MATCH - This angle allows viewers to feel comfortable with the charachters
LOW ANGLE - The angle and makes a character look more powerful. This can make the audience feel vulnerable and small by looking up at the character.

Camera Shots

CAMERA SHOTS -  A camera shot is the amount of space that is seen in one shot or frame, this demonstrates different aspects of a films setting, charachters and themes.
we will have to consider different camera shots when filming our horror moovie.
EXTREME LONG SHOT - is often used at the beginning of a scene or a film to establish general location
LONG SHOT - shows the viewers the building where the action will take place.
FULL SHOT - Allows viewers to see what charachters are wearing and to help demonstrate the relationship betweet charachters.
MID SHOT- allows viewers t see the characters' faces more clearly as well as their interaction with other characters.
CLOSE UP - shows charachters expressions  andenables viewers to understand the actor's emotions
EXTREME CLOSE UP - this creates an intense mood and provides interaction between the audience and the viewer.

Filming

2nd DAY OF FILMING
Today we will be filming in stains again. As we have changed our initial idea we will be filming inside rather than outside as it would be easiar. we will be filming in five different areas in and around the house, the bedroom, the living room, kitchen, attic and the garage.

New Idea

New film idea
Characters:
Riess
Bilal
Ollie
We decided to use less people in our film opening as it will be easier to interact with each other as there will be less lines to write and learn. By using less people i think that we can do our filming without every one mucking around and laughing.
Location:
We are still going to film in my house but we are going to film in my house.
When we tried to film in the garden in the night the camera was not picking up light very well and we didn't think that it would be a wise to film at night outside.
New Plot:
We have changed our film opening, we are going to start the filming in my room, the first shot will show the three characters in a room watching TV and on the computer, after a short while the front door will bang, One of the characters will go down stairs to checkout who it is, they will go to the front door and open it but there wont be any one there.
He goes back up stairs and the other actors will ask him who it was and as he about to reply the door will bang again, the door will continue to bang as he is walking down the stairs and he will see a silhouette of a man standing by the door, when he opens the door there is no one there.
He then goes into the kitchen to check the back door is locked and when he turns around one of his friends are standing behind him and he gets scared and jumps. All three of the friends are standing in the kitchen when they hear creaking up stairs. they go to check it out when they hear the door in the back room is banging and open, they then realise that something is happening. they slowly walk up stairs into the room where the creaking was and there is no one in there.
The front door then slams shut and they run into the bedroom at the front of the house and they look outside of the window and they see a man standing in front of the house and they don't know how to react.

actors in our horror movie

actors in our horror movie

There will be 5 actors in our horror movie, who are all the main characters, we chose people from our school who are generally good at acting. the actors we chose are:
Kyle Urbanski
Haroon Awan
Ollie pipper
we chose these people to act in our movie, as they live nearby and it would be easiar to film outside school hours.

Midnight Production Logo

Midnight Productions
This is our production logo, we chose Midnight Productions as our production name as it suited our horror theme. We came up with the logo design linking wolfs with midnight and the moon.
On the moon in the background i used two effects, colour overlay and gradient overlay, we also added text to sit on top of the moon and we used the warp text tool and used the arc style to get the text to follow the shape of the moon.

From our results we found out that mainly young people aged 15+ enjoyed watching horror films, we found out that these people where mainly males who either where still in school or had jobs.

Secondary Research

For our secondary research, in order to find out more about who our target audience is we used Pearl and Dean, this is a website that shows who the target audience was for different movies and different genres. We wanted to know the target audience for a horror. The first movie we looked at is 'The Wolfman', we found out that  horror movie was most popular by people aged 15-24, we also found out that the horror films are mainly watched by males and that they where mainly students. The second film that we looked at is 'Paranormal Activity, We found out that the age group was the same as 'The Wolfman',  and also that males watch horror films more and that they where mainly students. This shows us that the main target audience for our horror movie would be males who are aged  between 15-24.

Comparing Two Thriller Openings

Comparing Two Thriller Opening Sequences - Inception, Memento

Conventions used in Memento opening -
The opening has a crime being that, the main character of the film has just commited a murder but then forgotten that he has. This gives the audience an idea of what the film will be about. (his memory problems) This opening makes the audience question why the main character murdered the person and also why one of the supporting characters lied to him. (they said that they didn't know them when they did.) The protagonist is dis-empowered being that he has a memory problem and so other characters can take advantage of him. This also means that the antagonist can exploit this.

Conventions used in Inception opening -
There is a crime at the core of the narrative being that the protagonist and his friend are trying to steal (exract) information from another character. The opening makes the audience ask questions such as, 'how are they in a dream?' or 'how are they going to steal information from a person whilst in a dream?' There are extaordinary events happening in an ordinary situation. I.e. having a dream is normal but being able to go into and control a dream is extraordinary. The protagonist has a flaw, which dis-empowers him, of not being able to control his own sub-conscience from entering the dream and so it sabotages the situation when the protagonist is trying to steal the information.

Comparing the two sequences similarities and differences -
Both of the films start with a crime being commited. This is ery common in thriller films. But both of the crimes are different. in Inception the character is only stealing something, which helps to set up the plot of why he needs to be able to and can enter dreams. Ane in Memento the protagonist commits murder, which makes the audience question why he has done it. So the crimes at the beggining of both of the films make the audience ask questions, which will help to maintain the audiences attention on the film. Both of the protagonists have a flaw which dis-empowers them. In Inception the protagonist can't stop his own mind from sabotaging him. and in Memento the protagonist can't keep his memories and forgets things very easily. This is a similarity between the two films because both of the protagonists are fighting with their minds to try and finish their jobs. Both of the protagonists have a flaw which the antagonist can exploit. In Memento there is a complex narrative structure but in Inception there isn't. The introduction to Memento uses effects such as black and white in the introduction to show this.
